Set up your Gloomhaven Adventure Pack 1 dungeon accessories with a clear, repeatable process for sorting, placing, and packing up doors, traps, and boulders.
Quick answer
Pull only the doors, traps, and boulders your current scenario needs, keep them in a small tray beside the map, and place each piece as the room is revealed rather than pre-building the whole dungeon.
Why scenario-by-scenario sorting beats a full pre-build
Adventure Pack 1 is organized around frequency of occurrence in scenarios, so the pieces you need change from session to session. Pre-building every room looks impressive but slows play and makes it harder to tell which pieces are still available when a new room opens.
A small working tray also protects the pieces. Because the set is 3D printed at .2mm layer heights and sold unpainted, repeated handling on a bare table can wear edges and make small traps harder to spot against dark map tiles.
When this pack is the right choice, and when it is not
This pack suits groups that want physical doors, traps, and boulders on the map without buying a full terrain collection. It is not a complete dungeon dressing set: Set 1 contains only doors, traps, and boulders, so you will still need other markers for hazards or objects outside those categories.
If your table already uses painted resin terrain or a strict storage system, check that these unpainted 3D-printed pieces fit your tray depth and visual style before making them your default set.
Setup steps for Adventure Pack 1
- Read the scenario for door, trap, and boulder counts: Before opening the pack, scan the scenario setup and note how many doors, traps, and boulders the map requires. Pull only those pieces plus one or two spares. Keep the scenario card visible during setup so you do not over-pull pieces you will have to sort back later.
- Lay out a working tray beside the map: Place the selected pieces in a shallow tray or compartment box at the edge of the play area, grouped by type: doors together, traps together, boulders together. Avoid stacking pieces loosely on the table; small traps are easy to knock off and hard to find once mixed with tokens.
- Place doors only when a room is revealed: Keep doors in the tray until players open a doorway. Then place the door piece on the threshold so it reads clearly as closed, open, or blocked. Do not pre-place doors on unexplored edges; it leaks information about room layout.
- Match trap pieces to the map symbol before placing: Compare each trap piece to the scenario map symbol and confirm the tile it sits on. Set it down flat so it does not obscure terrain or overlay lines. If a trap piece covers a printed map feature players need to read, shift it slightly to the tile edge rather than removing it.
- Use boulders to mark blocked or impassable spaces: Place boulders after the room layout is set, using them to mark blocked paths or obstacles. Keep unused boulders in the tray, not on the map. Remove boulders as soon as the scenario says the space is clear so players do not treat a cleared path as blocked.
- Pack up by type, then return the rest to storage: At the end of the session, collect doors, traps, and boulders back into their groups and return unused pieces to the pack. Count the pieces against your setup notes before closing the box. A quick count at pack-up catches pieces left on the map or dropped during play before they go missing.
